CABO SAN LUCAS HOTELS

SOLMAR SUITES

Born in the small seaside resort city of  Ribadesella in the state of Asturias, Spain, one could hardly imagine how the life of Luis  Bulnes would unfold. Growing up near the water and surrounded by glorious architecture,  Luis developed a special affinity for the sea and of the adventure the horizon promised.

Coming  to Mexico City in 1948 as a young man, Luis took a job with Impresas Pando and by 1954 had  climbed the ladder to the position of general cashier of the growing tuna packing company.  In 1955, looking to expand operations, Pando offered the young Bulnes a chance to manage  their operation in Cabo San Lucas, a then fledging community of approximately 300 people.

By 1963, under his intense management, the operation became the largest tuna production  company in all of Latin America. Ironically, Luis always professed the only thing he knew  about tuna was that it was good to eat and that it came in a can.

All the while, Luis felt that the parched rocky land of Cabo had some value, although  he was often chided by the local ranchers that it was worthless because crops couldn't  grow on it. In 1960, Paco was born, destined to become his father's right hand man at  managing the hotel empire Luis had yet to construct. In 1963, Luis purchased the land that  the Solmar currently adorns. Later in 1970, Luis entered into a partnership with Luis  Coppola, Sr. and Raul Arechiga Sr. to build the Finisterra and then the Los Arcos hotels.

Sometime earlier, plans for the Solmar had entered his dreams and in 1972, construction  began. By 1976, the Solmar was operating 20 rooms and in 1978, 20 more rooms were added.  It wasn't until 1977 that the international airport was expanded which brought more people  to Cabo, expanding the Solmar to 60 rooms.

In 1993, Sr. Luis invested five million dollars to remodel the entire hotel and began  catering to a more particular clientele. The strategy was to separate the Solmar from the  discount hotels. Each off the 80 rooms and 34 condos and suites went through significant  upgrades, creating a hotel experience unique to the Solmar. There are three magnificent  pools to enjoy on the Solmar grounds, and specially outfitted rooms to assist the  handicapped. And of course, nothing beats a Solmar sunset when viewed from the main pool.

Many of our staff members go back to the early seventies including the head chef,  Ignacio Martinez, who prepared the first meal in the hotel. The resort offers complete  watersports program, horseback riding, world famous Solmar Fishing Fleet charter boats and  both land-based and deluxe live-aboard scuba diving, tennis, fine dining and  entertainment. All less than one mile from the center of Cabo San Lucas.

Dollar for dollar, it's nearly impossible to beat the value you'll get at the Solmar.  Our high level of hospitality, old-world charm and quality carefully are blended to make  the Solmar a world-class resort. Come and enjoy the experience!
